Flexible Pinhole Camera

flexible pinhole camera

    pinhole camera
  • A camera with a pinhole aperture and no lens

  • The most basic form of a camera in which no lens is used. A pinhole camera is made by making a lightight container and poking a pinhole in the front of the camera where a lens would go.

  • A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture -- effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box.

  • A camera whose lens is covered except for a pin-sized hole. You have a very small aperture, so you have to shoot long exposures.

  • Able to be easily modified to respond to altered circumstances or conditions

  • (of a person) Ready and able to change so as to adapt to different circumstances

  • able to flex; able to bend easily; "slim flexible birches"

  • capable of being changed; "flexible schedules"

  • elastic: able to adjust readily to different conditions; "an adaptable person"; "a flexible personality"; "an elastic clause in a contract"

  • Capable of bending easily without breaking

The DC Underground (4x5 Pinhole Photograph)

The DC Underground (4x5 Pinhole Photograph)

This is a 25 minute b/w pinhole exposure inside the Chinatown metro station in Washington, DC. Recorded at f/138 on Fuji Acros-100 film on my Abelson Scope Works metal pinhole camera. Some faint ghosts of passengers-in-waiting can seen on the platform towards the left edge of the photo. All of the lighting in this area is generated by the strip of lights, down at track level, extending from the center of the photo to the lower right.

In this station, there are two perpendicular levels, where the red line intersects the green/yellow lines. I was standing on the upper level, near the ceiling of the lower tunnel, with my camera clamped to a railing with a small gorilla pod.

On this particular Saturday, I got up at 5:30, reached the Greenbelt metro station by 7 AM, and reached this underground station by roughly 7:30 AM. I chose a weekend, and early in the morning, to avoid the crowds. I also refrained from setting a tripod down in any area in which people were walking, and most of my exposures were recorded with my 12 ounce camera clamped to a metal rail using an 8 ounce flexible plastic tripod.

LED-light Bellows Inspection

LED-light Bellows Inspection

A LED-Light on a flexible arm is an excellent tool for inspecting camera bellows for pinholes or other lightleaks.

Until now i used a flashunit but this strong LED-light functions as well and gives you more inspection versatility.

The Led-Light comes (ofcourse) from China and has the words Energizer and FNL2B2 printed on it. Probably there are sillions other available or you can make your own using a SuperLED with a high light output.

The camera is an Agfa Isolette III with shiny (earlier type) bellows, very prone to pinholes.
